Mia Love, the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress as a Republican, has passed away at the age of 49 after a brave battle with brain cancer. Her death occurred on March 23, 2025, following a long struggle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Born in 1975 to Haitian immigrant parents in New York, Mia Love began her political career in 2003 when she was elected to the Saratoga Springs City Council in Utah. She later became the city’s mayor in 2010, which laid the foundation for her future in national politics. In 2014, Love made history by becoming the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Utah’s 4th Congressional District. She also became the first Black person to represent Utah in Congress. Throughout her tenure, Love was known for her strong stance on reducing taxes, promoting individual freedoms, and advocating for conservative values. In early 2022, Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma. Despite undergoing treatment, by March 2025, the cancer stopped responding to medical interventions. At that time, her family announced that they had shifted focus to palliative care and cherishing their remaining time together. On March 11, 2025, Love shared an emotional open letter in the Deseret News, titled "A Living Wish." In the letter, she expressed her hopes for America’s future and her vision for a country rooted in freedom and opportunity. She wrote, "I hope you will see the America I know in the years to come. I hope you will hear my words in the whisper of the wind of liberty and feel my presence in the fire of the enduring principles of freedom." Mia Love’s passing has deeply affected both Utah and the nation. Utah Governor Spencer Cox paid tribute to her, calling her a true friend and an exemplary leader. "Her legacy of selflessness and determination will continue to inspire many," Cox said. Love leaves behind her husband, Jason, and their three children, Alessa, Abigale, and Peyton, along with one grandchild. Her family has announced that memorial services and details regarding her remembrance will be shared in the coming days. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable career, but her impact on American politics, especially as a trailblazer for Black women in the Republican Party, will continue to resonate for years to come.
