Residents in Sydney’s north-west are reporting a persistent and unsettling hum that has been disturbing their sleep for several months. The state’s Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has confirmed it is investigating the unusual noise. The hum has been particularly noticeable in Rydalmere and Ermington, occurring mostly at night between 6 pm and 6 am. Residents say the noise is continuous on some nights and can prevent them from getting a proper night’s rest. Ermington resident Brenton Potter described his efforts to locate the source of the hum. “One night, I drove from my home to Rydalmere, and the sound became clearer as I got closer to the Camellia industrial area,” he said. “We’ve lost a few nights’ sleep. It’s frustrating, and it would be concerning if it’s coming from industrial activity.” City of Parramatta councillor Kellie Darley said she had received numerous complaints from residents over the past month. “It’s driving people batty,” she told 702 ABC Radio Sydney. “The noise can start as early as 8 pm and sometimes continues until 6 or 7 in the morning. People just can’t sleep, and it’s affecting their daily lives.” The EPA is urging residents to report any observations of the hum, including the times it occurs and possible sources, to help with the investigation. Authorities have not yet confirmed the origin of the noise but are examining industrial and environmental factors in the area.
