Rayon Sports made a winning start to their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Zanzibar's KVZ FC in their opening Group C match at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. The Rwandan giants dominated from the opening whistle, creating several early chances through Nizeyimana Mubaraka, Issa Djiguiba and Ibrahim Mansouru Djingarey. However, KVZ FC's goalkeeper produced a series of impressive saves to keep the scores level. Despite controlling possession and spending much of the first half in the opposition's half, Rayon Sports went into the break with the match still goalless. Head coach's second-half substitutions proved decisive. Iradukunda Elie Tatou came on at the start of the second half and immediately added creativity to the attack. Minutes later, Kameni Herman Junior replaced Nizeyimana Mubaraka. The breakthrough came in the 67th minute after Elie Tatou was brought down inside the penalty area. Kameni Herman Junior calmly converted the penalty to give Rayon Sports a deserved 1-0 lead. Rayon Sports continued to press for another goal, while KVZ FC searched for an equaliser. In the 75th minute, Elie Tatou came close to doubling the lead with a powerful free-kick that struck the crossbar. The second goal finally arrived in the 79th minute when substitute Muhoza Daniel found the back of the net after replacing Ibrahim Mansouru Djingarey, sealing a comfortable 2-0 victory for Gikundiro. The win gives Rayon Sports their first three points in Group C. Elsewhere in the group, Sudan's Al Hilal SC also recorded a 2-0 victory over Kenya's Tusker FC, meaning both Al Hilal and Rayon Sports sit level on three points ahead of the next round of matches. The result marks an encouraging return to the CECAFA Kagame Cup for Rayon Sports, who had not featured in the competition for seven years and are aiming to reclaim the regional title they last won in 1998.
