The agreement, reached as lawmakers raced toward the midnight Friday deadline, would fund most federal agencies through the end of the fiscal year on September 30, while providing a short-term extension for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

U.S. senators gather on Capitol Hill as lawmakers move to pass a bipartisan funding deal aimed at averting a government shutdown.
Under the compromise, the Senate will advance five annual spending bills that cover key government operations and a separate two-week stopgap measure for DHS to allow ongoing negotiations over contentious immigration enforcement reforms. Senate Democratic leaders insisted that additional guardrails for agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) be part of future legislation after public outcry over recent enforcement actions. President Trump hailed the result as a bipartisan achievement, urging members of both parties to support the deal and warning of the risks a shutdown would pose to services and federal workers. Yet, because the House of Representatives is currently in recess, lawmakers must return to vote on the package, leaving a brief funding lapse still possible before the weekend.
