British entertainer Russell Brand has appeared before London's Southwark Crown Court to face seven sexual offence charges involving six women, as prosecutors outlined allegations of rape and sexual assault spanning a decade. Opening the prosecution's case on Wednesday, barrister Riel Karmy-Jones KC described Brand as a “ruthless, calculated and manipulative sexual predator,” alleging that he disregarded women's objections and treated them as a means to an end. The 51-year-old comedian, actor and former television and radio presenter faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The alleged offences date from 1999 onwards, during the period when his entertainment career was gaining momentum.

Brand has pleaded not guilty to all seven charges.

Prosecutors told the court that the six women encountered Brand in different circumstances, including through professional engagements, social events, performances and a political conference. The alleged incidents reportedly took place at various locations, including a hotel room, workplaces, a bar, a toilet cubicle and a private residence. The prosecution argued that the women came forward independently and did not know one another. It also presented testimony from Mark Pinheiro, who performed alongside Brand at cabaret shows during the 1999 Labour Party Conference. Pinheiro recalled a conversation in which Brand allegedly expressed a desire to sleep with 5,000 women. He also testified that Brand later spoke about a sexual encounter in Bournemouth during which, according to Pinheiro's account, events became heated and got out of hand. However, Brand's barrister, Ian Winter KC, challenged aspects of Pinheiro's testimony during cross-examination, questioning its consistency. The court also heard that Brand had previously provided written statements to police in which he denied engaging in non-consensual sexual activity. Prosecutors said he claimed not to remember the alleged incidents and suggested the accounts may have been re-imagined.

Russell Brand arrives at Southwark Crown Court alongside his wife, Laura Gallacher, as media attention surrounds his trial in London.

Arriving at court with his wife, Laura Gallacher, Brand told reporters he felt “blessed” and expressed hope that the legal process would lead to positive outcomes for everyone involved. The trial, being heard by Mr Justice Joel Bennathan, is expected to last at least six weeks. The defence will have an opportunity to present its case as proceedings continue. The allegations remain unproven, and Brand is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
