According to Israeli military official, seven Israeli soldiers were killed on  Tuesday when an explosive device attached to their armored vehicle detonated in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. The explosion occurred amid ongoing fighting in the area, where another Israeli soldier was reported to have sustained serious injuries from weapons fire, the military added. As reported by AP News, Hamas’s armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for an ambush targeting Israeli soldiers who had taken cover inside a residential building in southern Gaza. In a statement posted on its Telegram channel, the group said its fighters launched a Yassin 105 missile and another projectile at Israeli forces south of Khan Younis, killing and wounding several soldiers. The group added that it subsequently “targeted the building with machine gun fire.” It remains unclear whether the ambush and the armored vehicle explosion refer to the same event. The deaths come as the overall Israeli military death toll since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel has surpassed 860, with more than 400 fatalities occurring during ground operations inside Gaza. Meanwhile, Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported Tuesday that the Palestinian death toll since the onset of Israel’s military campaign has reached 56,077. The figure includes 5,759 people killed since March 18, when Israel resumed operations following a two-month ceasefire. Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians, stated that more than half killed in Gaza "were women and children." While many of the hostages have since been released through ceasefire deals and other agreements, a number remain in captivity. Israel maintains that it targets only militants and attributes civilian casualties to Hamas’s tactics of operating in densely populated areas. The Israeli military claims to have killed more than 20,000 Hamas fighters, though it has not publicly provided evidence to support this figure. Hamas has not commented on its own casualties.
