Shema Ngoga Fabrice has resigned as President of the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), stepping down from the position with immediate effect. In a resignation letter addressed to members of the FERWAFA General Assembly, Shema said his decision was linked to an integrity matter concerning him personally. He said he believes stepping aside is the appropriate decision to protect public confidence in FERWAFA, uphold principles of good governance and allow the relevant institutions to continue carrying out their responsibilities without further disruption. Shema also stressed that his resignation should not be interpreted beyond what has been established by the competent authorities. He reaffirmed his commitment to accountability, transparency and good governance in Rwandan football. The outgoing FERWAFA president further pledged to support a smooth handover process to ensure that the federation's activities continue without interruption. He described the opportunity to serve Rwandan football as an honour and expressed his appreciation for the experience. Shema was elected FERWAFA president on 30 August 2025, succeeding Alphonse Munyantwali. He was the sole candidate and received 51 votes from the 53 delegates who participated in the election. His resignation comes after a legal case involving Shema. On 22 September 2026, the Nyarugenge Primary Court sentenced him to a six-month suspended prison term for one year and imposed a RWF 3 million fine following a plea agreement with the prosecution, according to reports on the court proceedings. Shema's departure now leaves FERWAFA facing a leadership transition as the federation prepares to determine its next steps in accordance with its statutes and governance procedures.
