The United States military aircraft commonly known as the “doomsday plane” has appeared in public for the first time in 53 years. The aircraft was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport, which is mainly used for civilian flights. It landed on January 9, 2026, before departing shortly afterward for a military base. The E-4B Nightwatch is a highly modified Boeing 747-200 designed not for routine transport, but as a survivable airborne command centre for the President, the Secretary of Defence and other top U.S. leadership during extreme emergencies. Officially designated the National Airborne Operations Centre (NAOC), it can sustain national command and control if ground infrastructure is destroyed or unreachable, according to the US Air Force. The E-4B is described as a mobile Pentagon in the sky. It is capable of linking with nuclear forces worldwide and can aloft for extended periods with in-flight refuelling. The Nightwatch is often referred to as the “doomsday plane” because it is designed to function as a secure airborne command center in the event of a nuclear attack. It can remain in the air for long periods and operate as a fully equipped military headquarters. Built in 1973, the aircraft had not been seen publicly since that time. It is intended for use by the US President and other senior government officials, including the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, allowing them to direct large-scale military operations from a secure location. The aircraft is operated by the US Air Force, which keeps most details about its capabilities classified for security reasons and releases only limited information. One of the few confirmed details is that the Nightwatch is usually based at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska, which hosts the US Air Force’s strategic command operations. According to the US Air Force, each Nightwatch aircraft cost about USD 223.2 million to build, while operating costs are estimated at around USD 159,500 per flight hour. The aircraft can remain airborne for up to 12 hours without refuelling and can also be refuelled while in flight, similar to other modern US military aircraft. It is operated by a crew of 60, including pilots, co-pilots, and specialists with advanced expertise in aviation and military systems. The Nightwatch’s communication systems are more advanced than those of Air Force One, the aircraft normally used by the US President. It is equipped with 67 satellite dishes and antennas, along with extensive defensive systems, including protection against nuclear threats. The US Air Force says the aircraft can carry up to 112 people and has six main sections, including a military command center, a conference room, communication facilities, and rest areas. Although it rarely appears in public, US authorities say the aircraft has been kept on constant readiness since 1975 for use in the event of a major war.
