Alexander Volkanovski successfully defended his UFC featherweight championship with a second-round technical knockout victory over Movsar Evloev in the main event of UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The Australian secured the decisive finish on Saturday, October 24, delivering a right hand before following up with ground-and-pound strikes to end the scheduled five-round contest in the closing seconds of the second round.

The official stoppage came at 4:54, with just six seconds remaining in the round, sending the crowd at Etihad Arena into celebration.

The defeat marked the first professional loss of Evloev’s career. Despite the setback, the Russian praised his opponent after the fight, describing Volkanovski as a great champion and saying it had been an honour to share the octagon with him.

Volkanovski, meanwhile, indicated that he intends to continue competing as long as he can perform without suffering excessive damage. The victory adds another successful defence to his championship record and reinforces his position among the leading fighters in the featherweight division.

In the co-main event, Petr Yan retained the UFC bantamweight title after defeating Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the contest 48-47 in Yan’s favour as he used a combination of wrestling, pressure and dirty boxing to control the fight and keep Dvalishvili at a distance.

Yan’s victory strengthened his position in the division after previously defeating Dvalishvili in December to regain the championship.

Elsewhere, England’s Lone’er Kavanagh stopped Uzbekistan’s Ramazan Temirov by technical knockout at 4:28 of the first round in their flyweight bout.

At heavyweight, Alexander Volkov earned a unanimous decision victory over Rizvan Kuniev, extending his winning streak to three fights. Volkov subsequently renewed his call for a title shot.

The main card opened with Aaron Pico stopping Guinea’s Losene Keita by technical knockout just over a minute into their featherweight contest, securing his second consecutive victory.

UFC 333 delivered several decisive finishes and a championship defence that kept Volkanovski at the summit of the featherweight division.
