Tanzania’s second president, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, has passed away at the age of 98.
The death of Tanzania’s former Head of State was announced today, February 29, by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Mwinyi served as the second president of the United Republic of Tanzania from 1985 to 1995, succeeding Julius Nyerere. His previous posts include Interior Minister and Vice President.
Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has declared seven days of national mourning in honour of former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi.
According to President Hassan, who announced the death, the national flags will fly at half-mast throughout Tanzania for the duration of the seven-day mourning period.
Mwinyi will be laid to rest on March 2; his final resting place is yet to be confirmed.
