Tasmania: Boy dies after being hit by car near school

Boy aged 12 has died near a school in Hobart’s north after being struck by a car.

It happened on Main Road near Cosgrove High School in Glenorchy shortly after 3pm yesterday, according to 9News.

Several children reportedly witnessed that the moment the boy was run over outside Cosgrove High School by driver who was leaving the school grounds. 

The boy was a student in the school and was heading home after finishing the class, Police believe. 

Paramedics have done everything to save boy’s life but didn’t as he died at the scene.

The investigation is underway as police could not confirm the driver’s age, or whether they were a parent, teacher or student. 

Meanwhile, The driver of the vehicle was taken to Royal Hobart Hospital for mandatory testing after being very deeply shocked and concerned.

Tasmania Police Inspector John Cooper said any incident like this is devastating for all those concerned, especially family, friends, colleagues and all the emergency services workers that attend these incidents.

“We will be offering counselling to all the emergency service workers involved, and I understand the school will be offering counselling to all the children involved,” Inspector Cooper said. 

After the incident, the road between Elwick Road and Lampton Avenue have closed for several hours but now has reopened.
