Teen who allegedly stabbed bishop charged with terrorism offence

A 16-year-old who has allegedly stabbed a bishop in Sydney on Monday evening has been charged with a terrorism offence.

The incident happened during a live-streamed service at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley. He stabbed bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel.

Bishop Emmanuel, 53, suffered significant head injuries while Father Isaac Royel, 39, attempted to intervene and received cuts and a shoulder injury.

The offender was detained by worshippers inside the church before police arrested him.

NSW Police said in a statement this afternoon, the boy was interviewed by Joint Counter Terrorism officers, who then charged him with committing a terrorist act.

The teenager has been refused bail and will face a bedside court hearing today. The charge of committing a terrorist act carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment for life.
