The G5 Sahel aid organization is in flux

The G5-Sahel was made up of five countries that had joined forces to fight against jihadist groups in the Sahel region.

The G5-Sahel was formed in 2014, which consisted of the countries of Mauritania, Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. France had a major role to play.

On Saturday last week, Burkina Faso and Niger announced that they had left, while Mali had left in 2022. Only Chad and Mauritania remained. Now, in a single announcement, they announced that they are going to follow the terms of Article 20 of the G5-Sahel Agreement.

This article states that the organization can be dissolved if requested by at least three member states. In fact, the three countries that have completed exits do not explicitly call for the dissolution of the family. But even before the G5-Sahel has been shaky.

In 2017, he established a single army unit to fight against jihadist groups, but it did not achieve anything. Instead, the killings escalated, killing thousands of people. Millions more became refugees.

Experts also believe that the G5-Sahel has been one of the causes of political chaos, given the coups that took place in Mali in 2020, in Burkina faso in 2022, and in Niger in the past seven years. But last month they announced that they have united, saying that they are going to form their own united state.
