Veteran Liberal MP will quit at next election after 20-year of political career

Victorian Liberal MP Bill Tilley will end his 20-year political career retiring at the next state election in 2026.

“We’ve been able to achieve a lot together,” Mr Tilley told reports in Wodonga on Wednesday.

“I haven’t been keeping a green piece of leather warm in the Legislative Assembly,”

Mr Tilley served northeast Victorian seat of Benambra as its local member since 2006 and will not recontest in 2026.

Due to leukaemia, Mr Tilley has been absent from the state parliament but plans to return to work in May and see out the rest of his four-year term.

Mr Tilley hailed by opposition Leader John Pesutto as a tireless advocate for his local electorate, which includes the smaller town fo Beechworth, Corryong, Mount Beauty and Rutherglen.

The state Liberal leader wrote on social media wishing Bill all the best as he plans his return to work and look forward to his ongoing contribution in the lead-up to the 2026 election.
