In a stark reminder of the evolving security landscape, Victoria’s top law enforcement official, Chief Commissioner Shane Patton, has reaffirmed that religious radicalism remains the most significant public security threat facing the state, even as right-wing extremist activity gains traction across the country.

Addressing concerns about the rise of various extremist ideologies, Commissioner Patton emphasized that countering potentially religious-inspired violent activity continues to be the primary focus of Victoria Police’s Counter-Terrorism Command. Despite the growing presence of right-wing extremism, which has become increasingly visible and vocal, the persistent danger posed by radicalized individuals driven by religious ideologies remains paramount.

“Religious radicalism, with its capacity to incite violence and disrupt the social fabric, continues to pose the greatest threat to public security,” Commissioner Patton stated. “While we are fully aware of the growing challenges presented by right-wing extremism, our resources and strategies are primarily concentrated on preventing and responding to religiously motivated acts of violence.”

Victoria Police’s Counter-Terrorism Command has been at the forefront of efforts to identify, monitor, and mitigate threats posed by individuals or groups motivated by radical religious ideologies. This includes close collaboration with national and international intelligence agencies, as well as community engagement initiatives aimed at preventing the spread of extremist views.

Commissioner Patton’s comments come at a time when Australia is witnessing a resurgence of far-right activity, with various groups exploiting social and economic anxieties to recruit members and spread their ideologies. However, the consistent threat of religiously motivated terrorism, which has been responsible for some of the most devastating attacks globally, remains the key concern for law enforcement agencies.

“While we cannot afford to ignore the rise of right-wing extremism, it’s crucial that we do not lose sight of the ongoing and insidious threat posed by religious radicalism,” Patton added. “Our focus on this issue is unwavering, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to protect the public from those who seek to inflict harm in the name of religion.”

The Chief Commissioner also highlighted the importance of community partnerships in countering radicalization. By working closely with religious leaders, community groups, and local organizations, Victoria Police aims to build trust and cooperation, creating an environment where early intervention can prevent individuals from becoming radicalized.

As Victoria grapples with the complexities of modern security challenges, Commissioner Patton’s warning serves as a reminder of the delicate balance that law enforcement must maintain. The dual threats of religious radicalism and right-wing extremism require a nuanced and comprehensive approach, ensuring that all forms of extremism are effectively addressed without compromising the safety and security of the community.
