Rwanda is preparing to relocate the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) to a state-of-the-art facility in Masaka, Kicukiro District, as part of a major effort to modernize healthcare infrastructure and improve patient services across the country.

The Masaka CHUK facility is nearly completion, with construction reported at 98 percent. Once fully operational, it will house over 800 beds, nearly doubling the downtown hospital’s capacity of approximately 519 beds.

The upgraded hospital is designed to relieve overcrowding, improve patient comfort, and provide access to more specialized medical services, including advanced diagnostic care with MRI and X-ray machines. A helicopter landing pad will support emergency patient transport and rapid response for critical cases.

Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Yusuf Murangwa confirmed that CHUK’s relocation will be carried out in phases to ensure uninterrupted patient care:

“These are large facilities that require advanced equipment and highly trained staff. Some services will transfer first while others remain operational until fully ready at Masaka.” (kigalitoday.com)

The full transition is expected to be completed by September 2026, allowing CHUK to expand its service reach, improve emergency response, and handle the growing healthcare needs of Rwanda’s population.

The relocation is part of the broader Masaka Health City, which integrates hospitals, research centers, and teaching institutions. Facilities such as IRCAD Africa, a surgical training and research center, will support CHUK’s services and strengthen medical education and research opportunities.

The facility’s modern infrastructure focuses on hygiene, accessibility, and operational efficiency, creating a safer and more efficient hospital environment.

The CHUK relocation represents a key milestone in Rwanda’s healthcare modernization. By expanding capacity, upgrading medical technology, and enhancing emergency preparedness, the new CHUK facility will improve healthcare delivery, patient outcomes, and access to specialized treatments.
