On Thursday, July 31, Russia launched more than 300 drones and eight cruise missiles at Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing at least 31 people, according to Ukraine's Air Force. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for stronger international sanctions on Russia, describing the attack as one of the deadliest on the capital since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Zelensky said five children , the youngest just two years old , were among the dead. A total of 159 people, including 16 children, were reported injured in the assault. "No matter how much the Kremlin denies their effectiveness, sanctions do work and they must be strengthened," Zelensky stated. Kyiv observed a day of mourning following the attack, which caused the collapse of an apartment building and damaged a hospital, school, nursery, and university. U.S. President Donald Trump condemned Russia's actions and indicated that new sanctions against Moscow were being considered. "Russia, I think it’s disgusting what they’re doing. I think it’s disgusting," Trump told reporters. In July, Trump warned that Putin had 50 days to end the war or face severe tariffs targeting Russian oil and other exports. On Monday, he revised the timeline to "10 or 12" days, later setting a final deadline of August 8. Ukrainian officials on Friday said Kyiv had received “positive signals” from the U.S. regarding potential new sanctions, particularly targeting Russian oil and secondary markets. Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Trump had been "generous and patient," but emphasized that "now is the time to put maximum pressure on Moscow." Meanwhile, Germany pledged on Friday to deliver two additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine in the coming days. Zelensky reported that in July alone, Russia had launched more than 5,100 glide bombs, 3,800 Shahed drones, and 260 missiles, including 128 ballistic missiles. Since February 2022, Russia has waged a full-scale war against Ukraine — a conflict that has drawn in numerous allied nations on both sides. As of now, Russia controls approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.
