Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated after several oil tankers were reportedly damaged in separate maritime incidents, including attacks involving explosive devices and vessels striking naval mines.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said it had stopped two oil tankers in the southern part of the strategic waterway, accusing them of using unauthorised routes despite repeated warnings.
The IRGC also claimed that a supertanker caught fire after hitting a naval mine, describing it as the third vessel to explode and catch fire on Friday. Separately, Iran’s regular navy reported that two other oil tankers were damaged after striking naval mines in the eastern part of the strait.
Meanwhile, Oman’s navy confirmed rescuing 25 crew members from a Panamanian-flagged vessel that caught fire after being targeted approximately 196 kilometres off the coast of Musandam Governorate. The crew members received medical assistance.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported that a tanker was attacked with explosive devices attached to its hull by a small boat. The resulting explosions caused a fire in the engine room, but the crew extinguished it, allowing the vessel to continue its journey.
The incidents come as tensions between the United States and Iran continue, despite renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
US President Donald Trump said the conflict with Iran would be “wrapped up soon”, while Qatar has resumed mediation efforts in Tehran following a message delivered by US Vice President JD Vance.
However, US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper maintained that the main shipping routes through the strait remain clear of Iranian naval mines.
The developments have raised concerns over international shipping and energy supplies. Brent crude prices climbed above $116 per barrel on Friday amid fears of further disruptions.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route, making continued instability a major concern for international trade and oil markets.
